Over recent years, artificial intelligence has steadily integrated into everyday experiences—shaping both personal and work environments. In the legal field, AI tools have proven valuable by improving research speed, assisting in drafting, and simplifying contract and case management. At the same time, issues such as reliance on AI-generated false cases have raised valid concerns.

In response to this evolving environment, Manupatra conducted a groundbreaking nationwide survey to assess the adoption and application of AI in the Indian legal sector. The survey collected real-time feedback from professionals and aspiring lawyers, helping to identify current challenges and highlight areas for ethical and efficient AI deployment. Manupatra is now releasing its detailed report titled “Adoption of AI in the Indian Legal Landscape,” featuring insights from 227 respondents, including law students, practicing advocates, in-house counsels, firm partners, academics, and judicial officers from across India.

Key Findings:

Youthful Participation: 60% of those surveyed were between the ages of 18 and 34. Law students comprised 36.6% and advocates 23.8%, showing a strong interest in AI among early-career legal professionals.
AI in Practice: Around 60% reported using AI tools in the past year, particularly for legal research (77.9%), summarization (65.7%), and support with drafting (54.7%).
Efficiency with Caution: Though 79.7% experienced notable time savings, only 4.1% fully trusted AI-generated results without review. Additionally, 48.8% emphasized the need for manual verification.
Barriers to Adoption: 58.1% cited inconsistent output, 51.2% noted hallucinated content, and 42.4% pointed to the absence of Indian legal specificity in most tools.
Lack of Policy Framework: While 77.1% believe AI use should be disclosed in legal processes, only 11% indicated their organizations had formal AI usage policies.

Key Challenges:

Inconsistent Accuracy (58.14%): More than half of the respondents flagged inaccuracies and AI hallucinations as major limitations.
Data Privacy Concerns (47.67%): Many respondents were concerned about protecting sensitive client data while using AI-powered platforms.
Contextual Misalignment (42.44%): AI tools often fall short in handling nuances within Indian legal statutes and judgments.
Professional Responsibility (38.37%): Legal professionals expressed caution about ethical obligations, bias, and accountability.
Training Deficit (40.12% & 34.30%): A lack of staff training and limited awareness of AI options were significant barriers to broader adoption.

Looking Ahead:

Adoption Timeline: 35.68% believe AI will be a standard tool in legal practice within 1–2 years, while only 3.96% expect it to take over five years.
General Outlook: 46.25% hold a mostly positive opinion of AI’s influence, 18.06% consider it transformative, and 45.37% see both opportunities and risks.
Support Mechanisms Needed: Respondents emphasized the importance of certified training (67.40%), trial access to tools (66.52%), and policy guidance from regulatory bodies (47.58%).
Augmentation, Not Replacement: The prevailing belief is that AI will enhance legal research and drafting but that human judgment will continue to be essential in legal decisions.
